HeatShield® Fireplace Mortar is dry-mix refractory mortar designed for use in indoor residential fireplaces and masonry heaters. Because it is a dry mix, it can be mixed for dipping, grouting, and laying firebrick. After firing (use) the mortar becomes non water soluble. This mortar is extremely sticky and thermal shock resistant with service temperatures tested up to 2550°F (1399°C).

Surface preparation

  • Only apply to structurally sound, stable, clean, dry surfaces.
  • Application surface may be damp. Remove any excess water. Pre-wetting the surface may help minimize joint shrinkage.

Mixing

For grouting mortar:
For use with the PriorFire Retrofit Fireplace System. Use 3oz of water for every level scoop of dry mix (scoop provided in pail). To grout both side walls of the PriorFire retrofit: place 3 ¾ cups (30 oz) of clean, potable water in clean suitable mixing container. Add 10 level scoops of dry mix to water and mix manually or with small mixing paddle to a smooth, lump free consistency. Let mix stand (slake) for 3-4 minutes and remix briefly. Add small amounts of additional water if needed to achieve smooth grouting mortar. Do not over mix. Wash tools immediately after mixing. Pot life is about 1 hour. Pre-wet assembled brick wall using a sponge and clean water. Push grouting mix deeply into each sidewall joint with a rubber faced margin trowel. Scrape off excess mortar with a putty knife and wipe grouted wall with clean water and sponge until wall is clean.

For Dipping Mortar:

  • Place 2.5 quarts of clean, potable water in a clean suitable container.
  • While mixing slowly, add 20 lbs. of dry material.
  • Using a drill and paddle mixer at lowest speed (~300 rpm), mix to a smooth, lump free consistency.
  • Allow mortar to stand (slake) for 3-4 minutes. Remix briefly. Add only small amounts of additional water to adjust consistency.
  • Wash tools immediately after mixing.
  • Pot life is approx. 1 hr. Remix if mixture becomes heavy or stiff. DO NOT ADD MORE WATER. DO NOT RETEMPER.

For Trowel Mortar:

  • Place 1.75 quarts (7 8 oz cups) of clean, potable water in a clean suitable container.

Application

A joint of 1/8” or less is recommended.

Coverage

For grouting the PriorFire retrofit, each bucket will grout the sidewalls of two (2) units. 30 to 40 firebrick per 20 lbs. at 1/8” mortar joint.

Storage
