Read the Label - Paint N Peel
ChimneySaver® Paint “N” Peel Fireplace Cleaner is a water-based cleaning poultice that removes unsightly smoke, soot, creosote and dirt stains from masonry fireplace fronts and hearths. No additional water is needed for application or removal. Simply paint the product on the surface, allow it to dry, and then peel it off. Product can be used to clean most all masonry surfaces both interior/exterior, textured or smooth brick, stone, marble, granite, slate, tile, concrete, mortar and limestone. Product may not be suitable for some types of man-made or cultured stone. Note: product may be difficult to remove from extremely textured surfaces or deeply grooved bricks. Always test for compatibility and desired results with your specific surface before proceeding with entire project. Apply product in a small inconspicuous “test” area and allow product to dry completely (24-48 hours minimum) before removing. Heavily soiled areas may require multiple applications.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Do not thin product. Apply when surface and air temperatures are between 45° F and 95° F.
Preparation: Wipe surface with a dry or slightly damp rag to remove dust. Mask off work areas and cover all non-target surfaces with plastic or dropcloths. The use of removable painters tape is recommended to protect surfaces adjacent to product application, such as fireplace glass doors, fireplace mantles and any trim that abuts the masonry to which product is to be applied. Be sure to protect all surrounding carpet, fabric, metal, wood, and painted surfaces from inadvertent spills and roller splatter, as product may cause stains or damage to non-target surfaces. For best results, surfaces to which product is to be applied should be dust free, dry, and cool to touch before application. Do not apply while fireplace is in use.
APPLICATION
Stir before use. Tape off area to be cleaned with 2“ wide removable painters tape. Apply a thick, liberal coat, approximately 1/8” – 3/16” thickness using a paint brush and/or a thick nap roller. Apply the product halfway onto the removable painter’s tape. A penny can be used as a thickness gauge. Using the edge with Lincoln’s head, stick penny into applied material. The material should be thick enough to reach Lincoln’s forehead (see Diagram 1).
Be sure to maintain the recommended thickness across the entire surface area to be coated and near the edges of your project. Ensuring an even application will help the product peel off easily and uniformly when dry. Peel off the painter’s tape with dried material applied onto the tape for easier removal.
For areas that are more heavily soiled, agitation with a stiff nylon bristle scrub brush may be required to help the product work deeper into the surface. Once surface has been agitated, re-coat to be sure a thick, even application of product remains on surface.
On extremely porous surfaces or in extremely dry conditions, it may be beneficial to lightly mist the surface with water, agitate with a soft bristle brush and blot dry with clean rags just prior to application to help prevent product from drying out too quickly.
Coverage: When applied at 1/8”-3/16” thickness, product will cover 20 - 40 sq. ft. per gallon depending on the texture and density of the surface.
Cleanup: Wipe excess material off of tools. Tools may then be cleaned with soap and water. Dispose of dried coating in accordance with local regulations for non-hazardous solid waste. Absorb small spills with inert material and dispose of according to local regulations. Rinse spill area with water.
Dry Time: At 1/8”-3/16” thickness, product will take a minimum of 24-48 hours to dry completely, depending on environmental conditions.
Removal of Dry Product: Product must be completely dry before removing. Starting at an edge, pull the dry film off slowly at an angle with both hands. Be careful not to tear the coating as this may make it more difficult to remove. Product that does not pull off in a continuous sheet indicates the dried film is too thin to peel easily. Re-coat over the thinly applied material with a thick coat of product, let dry completely and re-peel. Once film is completely removed, fireplace can be put back in use.
